You awaken slowly, laying in the middle of a cold, hard stone floor … and realise that you have absolutely no idea where you are, or what in all the hells is wrong with your body.

Maybe you're suddenly bigger than you remember, or smaller. Maybe you've got more limbs! Less limbs! Sharper teeth? Weird, unfamiliar powers and magic to tap into, or perhaps no powers at all? Without a mirror, it's very difficult to tell exactly what — or perhaps, who? — you look like … but maybe whoever else is around you could help you figure that out.

There's something just a little creepy about this room. Maybe it's got something to do with the huge chalk pentagram you woke up in the middle of? It's surrounded by a ring of twelve dim, flickering candles, their flames sending the shadows dancing in the otherwise dark room.

There's a locked door to the East. No matter what you do, you cannot get it open.

Now this is quite the unusual phenomenon. To what end...?

[She hums to herself, thoughtfully.]

...again? You mean you've witnessed this phenomenon before?

Ah, yeah. A few weeks ago.

It was a weird trial, like a boardgame come to life.

[sleepdeprivation]

Let us hope then that this one is just as pleasant.

[--is what she says but. Gesturing at the floor.]

However, I have this feeling that is asking for far too much.

I wouldn't call the last one pleasant. I almost got eaten by a crocodile. But, um.

[They make a face at the floor.]

[Sitting up on the floor and looking around. Looking at herself.]

[Pause.]

[Feels her face.]

..... [Sighs.]

The candle flames roar, flaring brighter, taller, and a click can be heard from the door.

...I would hazard a guess that our way forward has been unlocked.

[She'll test it to be sure though. Time to see if the door opens...]

Then I suppose there's even less hope that this will be any nicer.

ENTRANCE HALL

You are in the Entrance Hall. It's big and fancy, with high vaulted ceilings, polished oakwood flooring, lots of intricate detailing here, there, and everywhere. A huge chandelier provides decent lighting.

To the South is the front door, a solid work of wood and iron, with four keyholes. It is very much locked and completely impassable no matter how hard you try. To the left of this door is a set of coat hooks, all empty, and an umbrella stand, which is not empty. To the East is a door, to the North is the Foyer, and to the West is the elevator.

That seems likely. [Coming over to investigate the door too.]

[The door handle is warm to the touch. When you open it, for a moment, you are met with the vision of a room split in two by a huge, jagged Chasm, joined by a burning bridge.

Then there is a lurching sensation and you are thrown somewhere entirely different.]

Wha--?!

[For a moment, her eyes are clearly not seeing the entrance hall in front of them. But after a few seconds, she is able to shake it.]

...Four keyholes? Goodness, could we make it any more difficult?

[Gives their head a shake.]

Why are these things always so ... so like this?

Because trial runners are dicks.

If it were that easy, I would be quite content. However, based on the vision I just had-- I think it's safe to say we should not underestimate them.

The elevator door may be filthy and rusted, but it's positively futuristic compared to everything you've seen here so far. It even has a schmancy-pants fingerprint scanner! Complete with bloody handprint smear!

Burning bridge is pretty ominous.

Maybe we're supposed to stick together?

Yeah, no kidding.

[They sigh.]

We've got our work cut out with this one.

[Investigates the umbrella stand!]

It's a regular ol' umbrella.
