The twenty first trial: Senna

You walk straight into the cockpit of some kind of space-faring vessel! It's legitimately impossible to tell how big said vessel is, or really, anything about it at all — even the decor is a bland, blank magnolia.

In the middle of the cockpit is a fancy sci-fi table-like console, surrounded by enough comfortable captain's chairs, in your team's color, for everyone to have a seat.

[She nods, looking it over.]

Fifty attack, forty-five defense, and thirty HP? Usually defense means mitigating HP loss, like instead of getting stabbed in the lung, it's the arm sort of thing.

Stabbing in the arm still hurts, and risks infection.
daydreamshimmer: (That's just bizarre)

But the infection takes at least hours if the conditions are absolutely horrible. You get stabbed in the lung and you're down in minutes at best.

The numbers good or what?

The numbers are good? And Des says I over think things, and should let her handle it.

We've never played, but she's more ruthless than I am.

My fiancee's brother would probably find the thought of me playing hilarious. He's a general.

Ruthless might be what we need to figure out what to do.

Yes, I agree.

Well, ruthless demon and someone who worked with politicians, not a bad set up.

Yes. Though mostly as a scholar. Attempts to have me do otherwise have not gone... as expected.

[He can't say they ended badly, but they certainly middled badly. Between Desdemona and Pen's god, things never go smoothly for anyone involved.]

So not just related, actually did government work?

Because I was mostly talking about me, worked with royalty.

Oh.

I was the Princess-Divine of Martensbridge Court Sorcerer. Or was, until she died and the new Princess had her own sorcerer on staff. Since then, I've worked for a duke or two.

I'd rather be left to other things, but the Temple doesn't care for an idle sorcerer.

Oooh, court sorcerer. That is impressive. Biggest names in Equestria magic always ended up in the court eventually. [Celestia is a big believer in merit.]

What does a court sorcerer do in your world?

Mostly whatever the person in charge wants, but there are also obligations if a hedge sorcerer -- someone who is not affiliated with the Temple -- is causing enough problems that someone notices. Every demon's first human riders are in that position, but it depends on what they do with it. There are other magical matters as well; I had some interactions with the shamans of the Weald, for instance.

I'm also a divine, so if necessary I can perform services and funerals.

You mean demon's first human is a hedge sorcerer, right? Yeah, out of control magic can be a problem.

You actually sound a lot like what a sorcerer would do for Celestia. Well, the magic would have to be really big problem for their attention, but it happens.

What makes you divine though? Isn't that like a god?

No, a divine. Someone who is ordained at the Temple to act as an intermediary for the gods. At least for the routine matters; if the gods need someone else, they have ways to grant some of their power to a human.

[which is... well, intimidating. Not quite terrifying for a human (for a demon, on the other hand), but it makes one very clear how huge the world is]

Yes, something like that. Or even an indirect agent, at least most of the time.

Well, that is a good idea. Having someone on high meddling and not even have a town hall to complain at is just begging for trouble.
